(2) Where to grow

Growing outdoors

We can put the tiny Mini-bonsai on a hand, and you may be think nice to bring them into your room, but we can't always bring them indoors to grow.

Let's think about what happens to deciduous trees through a year to find the reason.

In early spring winter buds begin to swell and produce new leaves.
And rapidly the trees are covered with leaves.
The leaves turn their colour to deep green from late spring to summer.
Then in autumn, they change their color to red or yellow.
From late autumn to winter leaves fall off, then trees become just twigs without leaves in winter.

When trees have leaves from spring to autumn, they need sunlight.
When trees don't have leaves until buds come out (When in dormancy) in winter, they don't need sunlight.
If you bring mini-bonsai into your room, they can't get enough sunlight when they are growing.

Although it is possible to bring mini-bonsai indoors for 2 or 3 days for enjoyment, or to bring some tender ones indoors for winter, be careful not to place where they will be dried out by an air conditioner or heater.
Moreover, there is environment of each country and there is what is grown as indoor plants. It is important to check the native habit of the tree and how in your country to grow.

Position and Sunlight

Put your bonsai outdoors.
While they are growing, put them in the sun for 3 to 6 hours per day.
You can do it in the morning or afternoon. (However, it depends on the species of the tree: Some species need more sunlight, but others need less.)
The range of 3 to 6 hours means that the three hour's exposure to the sun
is enough for their growth, but the longer one (six hours) can produce better conditions for spreading their branches, producing flowers, or bearing fruit. Moreover, good air circulation is indispensable for preventing the outbreak of pests and diseases. Considering these points, the ideal position for your bonsai is the well-ventilated place that faces southeast(in the Northern Hemisphere).
However, shade your bonsai from the declining sun if the place is exposed to sunlight all day long.

How to install a shelf

You can build a shelf when you decide where to install.
The height should be about 60-70cm for good ventilation, and it makes daily work easier. If the shelf is not high enough, mud will leap up with rain, and cats and dogs can attack bonsai easily. The height will help you to display bonsai well.
The shelf boards need to be about 2cm in thickness and 24 cm in width,
(The length of the boards would depend on your space for the shelf.) Square lumber or blocks can be used for the legs.
Frame works over the shelf would be usefull to put screens for strong sunlight in summer, or to put plastic sheets for frost protection in winter. Bonsai can be under the shelf during winter.
Please make the shelf firm enough not to fall over, and not to drop bonsai easily.
(Dropping bonsai can be quite dangerous if you have little children, or if you install the shelf on your veranda.)
